Get to know Avene

1) What are the core values of the Avène brand?

Eau Thermale Avène is a French dermo-cosmetic brand dedicated to every level of skin sensitivity: Allergic, intolerant and sensitive. Each product contains the Avène Thermal Spring Water, a unique active ingredient whose properties have been endorsed by dermatologists over the years. Extremely low in minerals and rich in silica and trace elements the Avène Thermal Spring Water has been clinically proven to be naturally soothing, anti-irritating and anti-free radical.

2) So Avène products are really much more than just skin care?

They are so much more! What we aim to do is offer our customers the best possible products to alleviate skin concerns without the need for a drug prescription. This is where the concept of Dermo-Cosmetics comes from – pioneered by Pierre Fabre – products dedicated to sensitive or vulnerable skin unlike traditional cosmetics which are suitable for healthy skin. Our team of researchers includes Doctors, Dermatologists and Pharmacists who test and formulate our products as if they were medicines, putting science behind every stage of a product’s development.

3) What is the difference is between a standard cosmetic product and a Dermo-Cosmetic product?

To put it in its simplest terms a standard cosmetic product is meant for healthy skin and hair while a Dermo-Cosmetic product is also for sensitive skin and skin types with common ‘concerns’ such as acne, eczema and rosacea or skin that is allergy prone. While these conditions may not necessarily require medical treatment, a dermo-cosmetic product may be used in conjunction with a doctor’s recommended course of treatment. In terms of testing, Dermo-Cosmetic products undergo safety tests but also self-imposed, rigorous clinical trials, which are then objectively measured and evaluated, just like medicines.

Avene Desert Island

4) What would be your three ‘desert island’ Avène products, and why?

Micellar Lotion: Cleanser and makeup remover solution enriched with 96% Avѐne Thermal Spring Water making it super soft on the skin. Like the water it has a gentle pH level of 7.5 which is similar to the natural pH of the eye area. It’s the perfect alternative to make up wipes, which sensitive skin sufferers can’t use. Little spherical clusters called ‘micelles’ gently remove impurities, make up etc leaving the skin beautifully clean – it’s a truly gorgeous but highly effective product!

Avène Thermal Water Spray: Recommend by dermatologists and with proven clinical soothing, anti-irritating and anti-free radical properties, the Avène water can be used to soothe a whole host of skin irritations such as sunburn, prickly heat and eczema. It can also be used to tone the skin as part of a three step cleansing regime, to set make-up and refresh skin on a hot day. The unique Avène water is so gentle that it can even be used on babies’ delicate skin as well as post-surgery.

Hydrance UV: A hydrating moisturiser to protect the skin from daily aggressions and help prevent skin ageing caused by the sun. Based on Meiboserin which limits the evaporation of the Avène Thermal Spring Water from the skin and Lipomucine® which increases coverage across the skin. SPF20. 2 textures are available: Light for normal to combination dehydrated skin and Rich for Dry dehydrated skin.

5) What is your most invaluable skincare tip?

Your skin needs to be cleansed every day. It looks like common sense but if you remove makeup properly, moisturise regularly and use sun screen when the sun shines you have the best chance of hanging on to that dewy complexion for as long as possible! Eau Thermale Avène is based on a 3 step routine: cleanse, soothe with the Avène Water Spray and moisturise.

Acne-prone skin

1) What is different about skin that suffers from acne, and what extra help does it need?

Acne is a very common skin condition. It may cause spots on the face, back and chest and is characterised by skin prone to oiliness and black-heads. Oral or topical treatments are usually effective and depend on the severity of the symptoms. For acne-prone skin, the use of a specific skincare product to help to reduce the sebum production should be a vital addition to your routine. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice.

Avene Cleanance

2) Which Avène ranges are best for those who are concerned with acne, and what sort of ingredients should they be looking out for?

We have a specific range for blemish-prone skin: Cleanance. The range benefits from a new active ingredient, Glyceryl Laurate, to absorb excess oil and give the skin an instant matte finish. The range contains a cleanser, toner, a light emulsion and a NEW Cleanance Mask. This 2-in-1 product has been formulated especially for oily and blemish prone skin. It uses Kaolin clay combined with Glyceryl laurate. It’s so lovely to use – you just smooth a generous layer onto the skin and then after 5 minutes you massage it off as you would a scrub. Your skin looks and feels fantastic afterwards!

3) How important is constancy in a daily skincare routine? Does it pay to stick to the same products?

As mentioned above, the daily routine is essential. The use of a cleanser and moisturiser morning and evening will help to keep the best possible complexion. It is important to follow and understand your skin’s needs and to find the relevant products, almost when your skin is sensitive. Once you have found the right product, why change for another one?!

Emulsion 50+

4) Which suncare should those with acne –prone skin be using?

Our new Emulsion SPF50+. Ideal for those looking for high protection, this non-greasy formula is suitable for face and body application. This light and readily absorbed formula contains oil regulating Glyceryl Laurate to give normal to combination skin a matte finish.

5) Which ‘emergency’, quick fix products would you recommend for very bad skin days?

Our TriAcnéal is a hero product. It encourages the elimination of blemishes and helps preventing scarring with its unique combination of three active ingredients: Efectiose®[1], Retinaldehyde and Glycolic Acid[2] combined with the soothing properties of Avène Thermal Spring Water, which is clinically proven[3] to have soothing and anti-irritating dermatological properties.

[2] Glycolic acid at 6% is a strong exfoliant which has a ‘peeling’ effect upon the surface of the skin. This promotes the elimination of blackheads and visibly smoothes out skin texture.

[3] Over 150 clinical studies by Pierre Fabre Laboratories and independent researchers have confirmed the unique soothing and softening properties of Avène Thermal Spring Water, including the Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology Vol 25, Supplement 1 (February 2011)
