Cited as the darker, more sensual side of Loverdose, this month Diesel presents the new Loverdose Tattoo Eau de Parfum. Its moody visuals and advertising tells the tale of obsession and seduction – yet despite this strong personality, I actually found Loverdose Tattoo to be quite a sentimental fragrance. Here’s why…
The initial impression of the fragrance is surprisingly complex. Where the original Loverdose is all about instant attraction with its vanilla and liquorice cocktail, Loverdose Tattoo takes a smoother approach, favouring the softness of a creamy heart and dry down to the tartness of its mandarin and blackcurrant opening. The combination is pretty delectable – almost dessert-like, in fact – though that becomes mellower as more of the rice steam accord comes through.
Wearing this fragrance is a bit like putting on your favourite LBD. Though it’s comfortable to wear, it’s really quite sexy. Sambac jasmine absolute, rose and tonka bean create depth and intrigue, working with the gauzy rice steam accord to keep the sillage of the fragrance quite close to the skin, as befits the fragrance’s tattoo inspiration. It’s impressively understated and sultry, and is really quite different to the original Loverdose fragrance.
In terms of reference points, if you’re looking for a more grown-up and sophisticated alternative to everyone’s favourite guilty pleasure Britney Spears Fantasy, then this offering isn’t poles apart (though it is considerably less sweet). Likewise, if Kenzo Amour is your thing but you find yourself wishing it was a bit more playful, then Loverdose Tattoo will sate your cravings nicely.
As for the bottle – well, it’s real dressing table fodder. The familiar multifaceted heart is given a makeover in smoky black glass embellished with the Loverdose Tattoo logo. The finishing touches are beautifully thought out too, with a glossy, embossed cap and strategically cut sides so that the bottle can support its own weight and stand upright.
This well thought-out design also means that the bottle fits really nicely in the palm of your hand. The plethora of edges and lines is surprisingly tactile! All in all, if you’re looking for a cozy yet interesting fragrance to see you through autumn and winter, you can’t go far from with this little number.
