Fragrance: FAQ
Each fragrance consists of three layers, and the ingredients in each layer are described as its notes. The layers of a fragrance emerge and fade in succession, and the combination of individual notes within each layer is responsible for the change in scent from the time the fragrance is applied, to the point where it has dried completely.
What are fragrance 'notes'?
These are the ingredients used to make up the perfume, and can range from plant and flower extracts to synthetically-created molecules. New technology can recreate the essence of almost any scent on earth, with recent examples including candy floss, sea salt and caramel.
What do the 'Top', 'Heart' and 'Base' categories mean?
Top notes are evident as soon as the liquid touches your skin. These are usually lighter than the other ingredients, and function by shaping the primary fragrance burst. Shortly after application, the top notes give way to the heart notes. These are usually floral, as most fruity notes are too light for this layer. These middle notes make up the core perfume as it sits on the skin, and it is these layers that define the ultimate dry down, when the perfume settles on to the skin.
The base notes determine how long a fragrance will last, and provide a background on which the heart notes can be appreciated. Interestingly, most fragrances have similar base notes, often including sandalwood, amber, musk and vanilla. This is because there are only a certain number of notes that will last long enough on the skin to form the base of a fragrance.
My skin has reacted badly to fragrance in the past. Is there any way I can prevent this happening or does anyone manufacture allergy-screened fragrance?
Unfortunately, some people are simply sensitive to fragrance. Look for alcohol-free scents, as they tend to cause fewer problems. If that doesn't work, or your favourite scent is not available in an alcohol-free formula, apply fragrances to your clothes instead of your skin.
How can I avoid my fragrance clashing with my deodorant?
Many fragrance ranges produce matching deodorants to combat deo-clash. If there is not one available in your favourite fragrance, opt for an unperfumed or fragrance-free deodorant while you're wearing it.
Is it true that a person has his or her own individual "scent fingerprint"?
Yes. Each of us has our own unique odour identity which is the sum total of our genes, skin type (dry/oily/light/dark), hair colour, diet, whether or not we take medications, are under stress, the environment in which we live, etc.
Is it true that the sense of smell is keener in the morning than it is later in the day?
No, our sense of smell is not as sharp in the morning as it is later in the day. More upbeat, "bright" scents can be appreciated at the beginning of the day to sharpen the senses. Once you've awakened your sense of smell, choose fragrances that correspond with your mood, trends or the occasion.
As we get older, can our sense of smell begin to diminish as is does for our eye sight and hearing?
Constant, creative use of all our senses can help to keep them at peak performance well into old age. It may be the time in a person's life to change fragrance type, i.e., one that gives a fast and stronger odour impression.
Does my sense of smell change as I grow older?
Many men and women over 50 begin to lose their ability to fully appreciate smell sensations. Older people often prefer stronger scents, though they must be careful not to overdo their fragrance applications, particularly in warm weather.
Is it important to apply fragrance all over the body?
Yes, fragrance rises. If a woman applies her fragrance just behind her ears, or a man his aftershave just on his face, the scent will slowly rise and disappear.
If fragrance is applied in the morning, will it last throughout the day?
No, fragrance is not formulated to last all day. It should be refreshed periodically. Approximately every three to four hours.
Does dry skin require a more generous fragrance application?
Yes, dry skin does not hold fragrances as long as oily skin and it should be reapplied more often throughout the day.
Is it true the sense of smell is not as keen in the winter as it is in the summer?
Yes, heat increases the impact of odour. In the summer there are so many fascinating "smell" signals around us, and we are more conscious of our sense of smell and certainly enjoy it to the fullest. In hot weather, each fragrance application goes a long way- so lighter fragrances should be worn.
Is it true that fragrance reacts differently on blondes, brunettes and redheads?
Yes!
Blondes with a fair skin suit long-lasting multi-floral creations. Their skin is often dry causing fragrances that are too subtle to evaporate rapidly.
Brunettes usually have medium-to-dark skin that contains natural oils, allowing scents to last longer. Dramatic Oriental scents are often favourites.
Redheads have extremely fair and delicate skin, which may be incompatible with fragrances that have predominant green notes.
If a person is inclined to perspire, does this affect the impact of fragrance?
Yes, body heat builds up, fragrance intensifies.
Can perfume be kept indefinitely?
Once a bottle of perfume is opened it is meant to be used. Otherwise it will begin to fade with time. Long exposure to strong sunlight or extremes in temperature can disturb the delicate balance of the perfume and change its scent. Perfume, to last, should be kept in a cool, dry place away from direct light.
Is it true that fragrance can be kept in the refrigerator for a refresher pickup?
Yes, but only lighter Colognes and Eau Fraiche variations. Perfumes should not be exposed to extreme cold or heat because either may upset its delicate balance.
Can fragrance be sprayed on the hair?
Only if the hair is freshly-shampooed. Oils and dirt which accumulate on the hair and scalp intensify fragrance and can distort it. Also, don't spray fragrance on extremely dry or brittle hair.
When travelling to a "high altitude" will fragrance be affected?
Yes, high altitude decreases the long-lasting effects of fragrance so it should be applied more often. High altitudes also weaken the strength of a fragrance message. Choose stronger fragrances.
