Esprit d'Oscar is a modern re-interpretation of Oscar de la Renta's signature scent 'Oscar', which was first released in 1977. Oscar is a big spicy floral and Esprit d'Oscar has been been designed to be a fresher, more contemporary modernisation of the original.

How does it smell?

Esprit d'Oscar opens with lots of effervescent, bubbly citrus that gives the impression of freshly squeezed lemon peel. The top notes really do sparkle before making way for the floral heart.

Tuberose is the main player here and it adds a sweet, almost rubbery warmth. Jasmine is also used, but it adds an off putting soapy greenness that seems to lurk in the background for most of the development. The addition of parma violet gives Esprit d'Oscar a sweet powdery aspect, almost like baby powder which tempers the tropical lushness of the other flowers.

The base is a wonderful composition of vanilla, musk and sandalwood. It smells warm, creamy and slightly plasticky. After a few hours all that is left is the warm creamy base and a slight hint of sour florals.

Esprit d'Oscar is very much in the 80's style of 'Loud and Proud' florals but the perfumer has masterfully made it seem lighter, fresher and more in line with today's tastes. Oscar de la Renta should be commended for releasing a scent that captures the spirit of the 80's in 2011.
