Spotlight on Issey Miyake

Nature is the greatest perfumer of life.
Issey Miyake

To celebrate the arrival of Issey Miyake at Escentual, we shine a spotlight on the visionary designer who blends cultures and influences in a perpetual quest for the essential.

Inhabited by insatiable curiosity, Miyake’s work is renowned as much for its fundamental simplicity as for its ability to surprise. His innate intuition drives him to constantly reinvent by experimenting with new techniques to manufacture objects or clothes. And like his fashion, the creativity behind his fragrances expresses a universal harmony with life…

L’Eau d’Issey
In 1992, Issey Miyake threw himself into creating his first fragrance. To start, he chose the purest substance of all – water. This paradoxical choice was the only fitting one: a fragrance like water, yet a fragrance with no scent. Issey Miyake wanted his fragrance to harness emotion. In composing it, he aimed to evoke the memory of water – the memory of the countless scents the senses gather all through the year and all over the earth. He wanted his fragrance to stir an unfamiliar emotion in the woman who wears it. And with this L’Eau d’Issey was born.

The top note is fresh and sparkling with freesia and cyclamen, moistened by a drop of rose water. The floral heart of fresh peony and sensual white lily resonates with the spicy, peppery undertones of carnation. In the dry-down, precious woods are blended with osmanthus, ambrette, sensual musk and a mere whisper of tuberose.

The bottle recreates a poetic vision of the designer – that of the full moon on top of the Eiffel Tower. The slender cone reaches for the future, and the years have left no mark on the timeless elegance of its design.

L’Eau d’Issey pour Homme
Issey Miyake’s first fragrance for men was launched in 1994. This scent has discreetly made a name for itself as a unique and elegant reference in the world of men’s fragrances. With its power and delicate balance, this wonderful scent is an instant essential.

Its freshness is surprisingly long-lasting with an unexpected splash of mandarin orange and yuzu, a Japanese citron with a deep, vibrant, memory-evoking bouquet. Alongside these notes we also find delicate verbena, cypress, coriander and sage.

A water lily middle note brings forth L’Eau d’Issey pour Homme’s aquatic floral character while the generous personality of bourbon geranium spreads throughout it with subtlety. Spicy hints of cinnamon, nutmeg and saffron bring warmth to the fragrance and bathe it in sensuality. And finally, assertive amber tobacco, sandalwood and vetiver base notes contribute their distinct masculine character.

a scent
a scent encapsulates the essence of a fragrance, merging technological innovation with nature’s poetry. “a scent as simple and beautiful as the air we breathe”

a scent is a green, floral, woody perfume presented in a bottle born from a slab of pure glass. A distinctive new freshness expressed by a green, modern trail. An optimistic, feminine perfume, an emotion like a vital gust of wind released from nature’s core.

The tale takes root in the soil, branching up towards the sky before blossoming with leaves and flowers.
Fresh notes of Hyacinth and Galbanum set the fragrance’s green, floral, delectable tone, enlivened by the benevolent vivacity of Verbena and a hint of Jasmine.
