The Best in Gourmand Scents from Louise Emma Clarke

There’s a new trend in the world of fragrance – and as a foodie, it’s increased my enjoyment of picking and wearing perfumes tenfold. Gourmand scents are based on edible notes – and their popularity is increasing by the day…

It’s not the first time that perfumers have added good-enough-to-eat notes to perfume. The first ever gourmand scent was Angel by Thierry Mugler, from £37.40, which launched in Paris in 1992. The perfume rejected traditional floral notes for gourmand aromas, such as chocolate, caramel, and candyfloss – and despite controversy when it first hit shelves, it went on to outsell Chanel in France becoming a true icon of the fragrance world.

Recently, however, Angel has been joined by a plethora of scents that include delicious gourmand notes. I’ve picked my top four…

A newcomer to the fragrance world, Lady Gaga Fame, from £21.25 (a black scent that turns clear on application) boasts gourmand notes of dripping honey, saffron and apricot nectar. I wasn’t expecting to like this scent as much as I did. It’s sweet, but very wearable.

Those with a sweet tooth (and sweet taste in fragrance) will fall head over heels for Prada Candy, from £34; the fun, saccharine fragrance from the luxury fashion house. The overriding note in the award-winning scent is caramel, giving it a surprising, but very indulgent scent. It settles and warms on skin – I’m a big fan.

If cake is your weakness, you will adore the tangy yet sweet aroma of DKNY Sweet Delicious Tart Key Lime Eau de Parfum, £36. Inspired by the creaminess of cupcakes, but with citrus key lime top notes, this is one fragrance that truly makes my mouth water.

Escada Rockin Rio Eau de Toilette, from £18.70, is inspired by the ultimate holiday cocktail; the Pina Colada. Just like the delicious drink, it has notes of Pineapple and Coconut, with hints of Sugar Cane, Tangerine and Papaya. The perfect fragrance to reminisce about a summer in the sun – I love it as much as the cocktail.
