I know, I know. It may seem a little early for summer fragrances right now given the weather, but there’s nothing wrong with a little second-hand brightness in the way of some summery reviews.
Though intrinsically sun drenched I think that these lighter new releases are actually pretty perfect for this time of year. They’re laid-back optimistic and very easy to wear – what more do you want from a fragrance when spring is refusing to appear?
This year’s limited edition anthology ranges from old favourites to brand new compositions, spanning Jean Paul Gaultier to Vivienne Westwood. Here’s my pick of the bunch:
Jean Paul Gaultier Classique Summer
This year’s Jean Paul Gaultier Classique Summer remains fresh, floral and ever so slightly solar thanks to its signature orange blossom note, but the real show-stopper is its gorgeously tattooed, curvaceous bodice.
Jean Paul Gaultier Le Male Summer
Like Classique, this year’s Jean Paul Gaultier Le Male Summer remains largely unchanged (great news for its many fans!), with a Japanese-inspired, tattooed torso. I can see the pair being big hits with collectors!
CK One Summer
Another classic summer fragrance now: CK One Summer, this time with a brand new composition. Watermelon, citrus, cucumber, mint, moss… it’s fresh, fruity, and everything you want from a summer scent.
Stella McCartney Stella Summer
Fans of the original Stella won’t be disappointed with this year’s upcoming Stella Summer. It’s been freshened up with icy lemon and crisp apple, but retains its pretty ambery rosiness throughout.
Roberto Cavalli Acqua
Roberto Cavalli Acqua’s combination of orange flower, jasmine and lily-of-the-valley is truly lovely. It’s warm yet aquatic, and has a full-bodied floral core that makes a lovely change from the summer fragrance norm.
Vivienne Westwood Flirty Alice
The vintage-inspired Vivienne Westwood Flirty Alice borrows aspects from the original Naughty Alice fragrance, namely its powdery rose and vanilla accords, and brightens them with fresh and uplifting green tea.
Issey Miyake L’Eau d’Issey Summer
Last year’s summy edition was green; the year before that more aquatic. This year’s L’Eau d’Issey Summer is all about fruity fun – specifically the exotic dragonfruit. Lychee, passion fruit and guava make this a sweet treat.
Issey Miyake L’Eau d’Issey Pour Homme Summer
Inspired by the quenching juiciness of the kiwi fruit, this year’s L’Eau d’Issey Pour Homme Summer is suitable sundrenched. Grapefruit, pineapple, nutmeg and vetiver make this a special cocktail.
