The Perfect Red Lipstick

When I go out at night, I always tend to go back to wearing the classic red lip. There’s something so timeless about it and nothing quite brightens your face like a slick of red lipstick. I think that once you find ‘the one’, you will wonder what you’ve been missing.

Something that’s so important about wearing a red lip is to make sure that you take the time to prep your lips, as this makes the colour apply much smoother and it just helps everything to last longer. I always recommend using a good lip scrub – the best I’ve found is the Ole Henriksen African Red Tea Lip Scrub. On top of that I like to use La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Lipbalm, which is really rich and creamy, and helps to hydrate your lips. After that combination, any red lipstick you apply will look so much better.

Another one of my top tips is to use a lip liner before you use a red lipstick – a lip liner helps everything to look neater, and also keeps the colour on your lips for longers as well as preventing the colour from smudging or bleeding. I love the lip liners from Guerlain because they’re so creamy. I also recommend using the Daniel Sandler Lip Brush when you apply the lipstick colour as this helps you to be more precise with the colour.

When it gets to the actual red lipstick, it can be a bit daunting at first – there are so many options to choose from that it overwhelm you. There are different finishes, undertones, formulas…  It’s fun to experiment and play around with different options until you find one that you know you love. Some of my favourites for day time wear are the DHC Lipstick in Petal Velvety Red and the Clarins Instant Light Lip balm in Red. They’re both sheer, so they’re so easy to wear and would be perfect for a beginner. I love to wear an orange toned red lipstick, and one that lasts all night is the Daniel Sandler Lipstick in Marilyn.

Once you’ve found a red lipstick you love, it can be confusing to know what makeup to wear along with it. My favourite look is to wear a neutral matte eye with a small cat eye liner flick. My top pick would be the Clarins Ombre Matte Eyeshadow because they’re so incredibly easy to use and make it look like you’ve spent a lot longer on your makeup than you really have. My liquid liner of choice is the DHC Liquid Liner because the nib is so tiny and it’s a really true black.
