New & Noteworthy: Male Fragrances

Here at Escentual, we have had an exciting drop of new masculine fragrances over the last few weeks, and we are pretty stoked to be sharing them with you.

Some of our favourite brands; the likes of GUERLAIN (one of the oldest, most esteemed fragrance houses), GIVENCHY and Versace, have pulled out all of the stops to bring us fragrances that play across all genres, with colognes, gourmands and woody scents aplenty. Let’s dive into all of that exciting newness!

#1 GUERLAIN L’Homme Ideal Cool

GUERLAIN L’Homme Ideal Cool Eau de Toilette

When I took a tour of alternative Eau de Colognes last week, I described L’Homme Ideal Cool as the “suavest cat on the block”; this is a statement that I very much stand by, and I think this one may be the ‘it scent’ for gents this summer.

Taking the traditional GUERLAIN penchant for the gourmand and livening it up with a whole heap of fresh notes, L’Homme Ideal Cool is a green, nutty delight with bracing facets of mint, anise and orange. Patchouli and vetiver bring a fizzy energy, while also adding a butch touch that makes for an intriguing contrast. It’s about as much fun as it sounds, which is to say that it’s a whole ton of fun, and it smells great too.

#2 Versace Eros Flame

Versace Eros Flame Eau de Parfum

I don’t know about you but when I think ‘Versace’ I think opulence. I want my Versace fragrance to be excessive – I want it to say “I’m a bit ridiculous, but aren’t I so stylish with it?!”. For me, Eros Flame hits the nail on the head; it’s a modern masculine but with a Versace touch which, let’s face it, is the Midas touch.

Eros Flame is a cacophonous blend of citrus (lemon, tangerine and orange), spices and herbs (pepper and rosemary), woods (sandalwood, cedar, pepperwood) and tonka bean; all served with that over the top Versace flare. It smells fresh and sharp, but it warms up to something exotic and spicy too. If you’re a bit of a showoff, then Eros Flame is for you.

#3 Givenchy Gentleman Cologne

GIVENCHY Gentleman Cologne Eau de Toilette

We are right in the middle of the GIVENCHY fragrance renaissance, and I am here for it. Over the last two years, they have launched some absolutely cracking scents, and GIVENCHY Gentlemen Cologne is one of them.

This modern Eau de Cologne pairs zesty, refreshing citrus notes with the cool, suede-like softness of iris and the spicy greenery of vetiver. With its cool, misty air (thanks to lots of modern white musks) Gentleman Cologne is an elegant and understated fragrance that begs to be spritzed on under a clean white shirt – it’s lively, aromatic and masculine, capturing the spirit of the GIVENCHY man in a completely contemporary manner.

#4 Paco Rabanne Invictus Legend

Paco Rabanne Invictus Legend Eau de Parfum Spray

Paco Rabanne knows what makes a legend and with Invictus, it’s most godly of fragrances, it forged a titan out of earth, metal and water.

Invictus Legend seeks to evolve the odyssey of Invictus, throwing it into the depths of the ocean – into Poseidon’s territory. This is a fresher, softer and altogether more diffusive and light version of Invictus. With a refreshing breeze of mineral sea water and bitter grapefruit, Invictus Legend feels less abrasive and more affable, warming up to a cosy blend of amber and woods that evokes warm bodies on the beach. It’s the best Invictus yet! You can read my full review here.

#5 DSquared Wood Pour Homme

DSquared2 Wood Pour Homme Eau de Toilette Spray

DSquared2 Wood Pour Homme Eau de Toilette

DSquared has always had an olfactory obsession with woods, and many of their fragrances have had a wild, forest-like vibe. As one would expect with a name like Wood Pour Homme, DSquared’s latest very much sits within this outdoorsy theme.

It’s a delicately spiced take on woods that sees the core of white woods accented by splashes of bergamot, dashes of lemon and a twist of violet leaf. The effect this creates is smooth and subtle, evoking the scent of the woods caught softly on a flannel shirt. Wood Pour Homme is an easy, enjoyable fragrance that will make you look at woods in an entirely different way.

#6 Armani Code Absolu

Giorgio Armani Code Absolu Eau de Parfum Spray

Giorgio Armani Code Absolu Eau de Parfum

Armani Code is a modern classic, and as with many fragrances that sit in the upper echelons of the hall of fame, it has found itself reinterpreted time and time again. This one, Armani Code Absolu, is the booziest, most delicious, and dare I say the sexiest, Code so far.

Awash with golden notes of rum, vanilla and tonka bean, Armani Code Absolu is a more mature, sensual scent that feels like it needs to be worn at night time, preferably with black tie. If you feel like the sophisticated spirit of Armani is your bag, and you have a tendency to lean towards those fragrances that are richer, then Armani Code Absolu is the brand new accessory you need.
