If being more environmentally-friendly is on your to-do list this year, you’re in the right place. Due to the growing concern of excess waste, sustainability is at the forefront of most people’s minds. We’re all trying our best to up our game – including me. I’ve purchased a refillable water bottle, invested in some metal straws and I buy a lot of my clothing and accessories pre-loved. But what can we do when it comes to our beauty routines?
The cosmetics industry is accountable for around 30-40% of all landfill waste, with approximately 120 billion units of packaging produced by the industry every year – that’s pretty shocking. On the positive side, changes are being made. We’re seeing a rise of post-consumer recycled plastic packaging, and brands are exploring the possibilities of zero-waste and refillable products. Now, refillable beauty does include the use of plastic, but it’s a step in the right direction. They allow us to cut down on excessive packaging without compromising on the wow-factor. Brands like DIOR, Yves Saint Laurent, GUERLAIN and Clarins are creating covetable packaging that requires a one-time purchase so that when you run out, refills are available to slot into the original palettes, pots and pumps.
That’s not all that’s great about refillable beauty. It’s also less damaging to our bank balance. Refills are always cheaper than buying the original product, so you’re getting a discount on things that get used up quickly (foundation, skincare, lipsticks) while cutting down on excessive packaging every time you repurchase. It also allows you to switch things up to match the seasons. Here are some of my favourites available on Escentual right now…
#1 The Lipstick
Rouge G is refillable beauty at its very best. The lipstick cases are works of art, plus, you can keep refilling it with your favourite shade or switch shades to suit your mood, which makes them even more appealing. But that’s not all, GUERLAIN has thought of everything by including a mirror within the case to make top-up’s on-the-go a real moment of luxury.

#2 The Foundation
Ok, I admit it, I fell in love with the minimalist white casing of this cushion foundation before I discovered what a brilliant glow foundation it is and the fact it’s also refillable. Its water-based formula makes it quick and easy to apply using the included sponge (although I prefer to use my foundation brush). It gives a luminous and long-lasting finish and has an adjustable coverage, although I do like to keep mine in my handbag for touch-ups on-the-go. After all, you never know when those off-the-cuff after-work drinks are going to happen, do you?
#2 The Serum
Before their official launch, I got to try some of the Pure Shots range, and let’s just say I am seriously impressed. With a variety of skincare products for different concerns and needs, there’s something for everyone. My favourite is the Light Up Serum, it contains a blend of micro-pearls and vitamin C, which add a veil of radiance to your face to create the perfect canvas for makeup. And, as you’d expect from YSL, the packaging is uber-luxe; once you’ve finished your serum, you can either refill it with the same ‘cartridge’ or pick one of the other Pure Shots formulas.
