How to Glow Through The Festive Season, Even If You’re Staying In

New years makeup look

When I think of New Years I think of glam, glitter and sequins. Do you feel the same? Truth be told, it’s my favourite part of the season; I love to dress up. Although this year we’ll all be celebrating in lockdown, it doesn’t mean we have to miss out on the party glamour that makes it really feel like NY.

This year, I’m swapping the sparkle for subtle strobing and seamless skin; a pop of glitter, sharp winged eyeliner or a bold lip are small changes that create major impact. I’ll be talking you through how to create these glow-giving techniques with makeup you already have – whether you’re an expert or a novice – I’m here to inspire you; choose to use them all together (like I have) or cherry-pick your favourite tips and techniques to customise your own level of laid back glam for this New Years.

1. The Pop Of Glitter

A pop of sparkle takes little to no effort but can take your look from cosy to glam in an instant. Whether you usually opt for bright colours or pared back nudes from day-to-day, a dash of glitter eyeshadow in the centre of your eyelid will take your eye look to new heights.

What I use:
Urban Decay Naked Honey Eyeshadow Palette and Yves Saint Laurent Sequin Crush Glitter Shot Eye Shadow in shade Legendary Gold.

How To Do It:
To create this look I use the Urban Decay Naked Honey, but you can use this method with whatever eyeshadow palette you use. To create a gradually blended look start with a soft shade (swarm) for the crease, apply a deeper shade (drip) in the corner and blend. Then, add a highlight colour (Flyby) to brow bone, and of course, a pop of glitter to the centre of the eyelid (YSL crushed sequins).

2. The Dramatic Flick

A sharp flick can add incredible definition to your eye and even reshape your natural eye shape with a few strokes. I can’t think of a better way to enhance your eye than this, it only takes a few seconds, but the results are ncredible. Apply directly on top of your eye shadow for added glam or onto your bare eye for a classic look.

What I Use:
Benefit Roller Liner Liquid Eyeliner

How To Do It:
Take your liquid liner using the side of the pen, stamp the shape of your eye and work out the direction you want your flick to be in (draw it towards the end of your brow). Start your end from the outside and draw a line to the corner of your eye with a soft hand. Join all the stamp marks across the lid of your eye and shape.

3. The Shimmering Skin Trick

The easiest way to take your makeup up a notch in a one sweep is to opt for a shimmer blush (or apply highlighter over your blush), because is it even New Year’s if you’re not sparkling from head-to-toe?

For the perfect sparkling winter flush, dust your shimmer blush across the apple of your cheeks to help sculpt your facial structure while glistening all night long under all the Christmas lights. From selfies, Zoom parties to facetime at midnight, your blush promises to twinkle through it all!

What I use:
DIOR Diorskin Nude Luminizer Blush in Coral Pop

How To Do It:

Apply your blush over the apple of your cheeks and take it up further, for more drama.

4. The Bold Lip

Nothing makes a look come alive like a bold lipstick shade, it can make a casual outfit seem dressed-up and the best thing? It takes seconds. It is so easy in fact, you can do it without a mirror, but I wouldn’t recommend it! A bright red, coral orange or bold pink all say New Years and pair with sequins or comfies (your choice!) and you’re good to go; it can make a look absolutely sensational and not to mention it’s a major confidence boost when the compliments come reeling in from your family and friends.

What I use:
Yves Saint Laurent Vernis a Levres Water Lip Stain 605 – Bain De Corail

How To Do It:
Trace the doe-foot over the shape of your lips and press together.
