Has the winter itch got you? You’re not alone. Our Instagram community report that freezing temperatures are causing skin redness, dryness, and irritation. I called in La Roche-Posay‘s Head Of Training, Janette to talk through the hows, the whys and most importantly, how to put a stop to all of the scratching, cracking and rubbing. Watch along to learn the basics, or scroll below for the cliff notes:

Why does my skin get drier in winter?

Your skin gets drier in winter due to the drop in humidity (meaning the air is dryer). The dry air literally sucks the moisture out of your skin, and cold weather can cause sensitivity, itching and redness, also known as ‘The Winter Itch’.  If you’re outside more, protect your face with a snood or scarf, and check the below tips for winter-proofing your skincare routine.

Indoors? Central heating can also dry out your skin, so it’s important to stay hydrated topically. Keep a facial mist close by to top up your moisture levels during the day.

My pick: La Roche-Posay Toleriane Ultra 8 Daily Soothing Hydrating Concentrate
I like to call this a liquid moisturiser, rather than a face mist. Out of the tens of hundreds I’ve tried, I prefer this mist’s formula as it’s weightless, but it’s packed with moisturising properties (glycerin, which is a humectant) that traps moisture in the skin – it’s perfect for wintertime, trust me.

How can I winter-proof my current routine?

1. Check your cleanser:

Switch to a cream cleanser during winter if your skin is prone to feeling tight or itchy, as cleansing with water can irritate skin.

Janette’s pick: La Roche-Posay Toleriane Dermo-Cleanser

This cleanser is great for all skin types during winter, as it’s gentle and effective.

2. Check your textures:

If you love your current moisturiser during summer, but feel like it’s not enough for winter, switch to a thicker texture. For example…

• Fluid to Cream
• Lotion to Cream
• Cream to Balm

Janette’s pick: La Roche-Posay Toleriane Ultra Cream

This is my ultimate favourite product. In the summer I use the fluid, but in winter that’s not enough, so I have to use the cream.

3. Add in a serum

Serums penetrate deeper into the skin than any moisturiser can. So if you don’t use a hydrating serum, now’s the time to reap the benefits. You’ll see an improvement in your skin’s texture, softness and health!

Janette’s pick: La Roche-Posay Hyalu B5 Hyaluronic Acid Serum

Hyalu B5 Serum is the one to choose for a daily moisture boost.

4. Layer a face mist

After washing your face; on your coffee break, or before bed, spritz the moisture whenever you can to beat dehydration and the winter itch.

Janette’s pick: La Roche-Posay Toleriane Ultra 8 Daily Soothing Hydrating Concentrate

This mist is fantastic for winter, as it’s actually a moisturiser!
