Unfortunately, not all eyelashes were created equal. Some of us are blessed with long fluttery eyelashes, while others have short spiky lashes that need a little extra help. If you fall into that category, this edit is for you. Look-at-me lashes are just a mascara wand away!
1. For Natural Length
Product: DHC Mascara Perfect Pro Double Protection
Why it’s good for lengthening: it’s a tubing mascara and adds length to lashes by clinging to the lash and making it appear longer.
Wand: small and thin – it allows precision when dealing with shorter lashes – a real bonus.
Longevity: excellent, this didn’t smudge or flake at all throughout an entire day. Seriously impressive long-wearing formula.

For a nifty little mascara, with a tiny wand the DHC Double Protection mascara certainly packs a punch. Firstly, let’s talk about the wand. I have to hold my hand up and say that I thought I was going to hate it being a lover of thicker and more chunkier mascara wands, but I couldn’t have been more wrong! It’s slim enough to reach the shortest of lashes with precision and allows you to perfectly coat each lash with ease. The tubing effect adds significant length to lashes as it coats and shields each lash with flexible polymers. My eyelashes look long and fluttery all day long with no smudging or flaking, and it didn’t fade either!
2. For Volumised Length
Product: Benefit they’re Real! Lengthening Mascara
Why it’s good for lengthening: the wand clings on to parts of the lashes that other wands can’t and it has a lifting effect that makes lashes appear longer.
Wand: long but not too wide, it features rows of alternating short and long rubber bristles. It also features bristles on the tip so that you can get to those tiny lashes in the inner and outer corners.
Longevity: smudged ever so slightly on my lower lash line but overall excellent longevity.
Special features in addition to being lengthening:
- Volumising – this mascara will also thicken your lashes without looking over the top.
- Lifting effect
An oldie but a goodie, there’s a reason why Benefit’s they’re Real mascara is still as popular today as it was when it was released and that’s because it appeals to so many people. It works just as well on long lashes as it does on short lashes and gives a lengthening and volumising effect that doesn’t look overdone. For me, the wand helped to coat every single lash, giving it volume without any clumping. The short bristles deposit the formula while the longer ones grip onto the lash and comb through every lash – it’s clever and offers lift and precision.
3. For Clump-Free Length
Product: Lancome Definicils High Definition Mascara
Why it’s good for lengthening: bio-selective polymers included in the formula add the length.
Wand: small, narrow and precise
Longevity: wears well throughout the day, no smudging or flaking.
Special features in addition to being lengthening:
- Bio-selective polymers that cling to lashes through electrical attraction to give extra length
- Hedgehog pattern bristle brush for gradual application and a natural result.
Out of the three mascaras I’ve picked, Definicils High Definition definitely gave the best length and I’m putting it down to the special Lancome technology that uses bio-selective polymers to add an extra boost to lashes. It separates beautifully and the wand makes it so quick to achieve a defined long-lash effect in seconds with minimum effort and zero clumping.
