Beauty trends come and go but some reappear every year. When I think of winter makeup trends, three standouts come to mind. Red or dark-toned lip colours, shimmering eyes, and highlighter *everywhere*. I’m here to remind you of the trends you need to try or revisit with a modern 2022 twist…
Shimmering Eyes With A Twist
Glitter and shimmer is a go-to winter eye look, but this year concentrated pops of shine are the go-to. We’ve seen dramatic glitter-liner looks on hit TV show Euphoria, and all over our Instagram – my favourite advocate of the glitter-liner look is GUERLAIN creative director, Violette Serrat.

Taking an angled brush or a fine liner brush, I spray it with setting spray (hello Urban Decay All Nighter) and dip into a shimmering eyeshadow. Voila! You have a new sparkly eyeliner to draw precise lines of glitter. I love making a classic cat eye flick sparkle.
You can either be bold and use a colourful shimmer, or for a hint of sparkle, why not dry a black, navy or dark green shadow? The Urban Decay Robin Eisenberg palette is my favourite for a glittering liner look.
Modern Take On A Classic Red Lip
Oval lining
Whether you prefer a true brick red or burgundy tones, nothing screams winter more than a festive red lip. I love to accentuate my cupid’s bow for a polished finish, but to keep up with trends, try viral TikTok trend oval lining for a pouty look. To oval line, use a lip liner to apply one dot in the centre of your cupid’s bow, then one at the bottom of your lower lip. Then, draw an oval shape from your bottom lip and over your cupid’s bow, joining together for a new circular shape.

Lip Slugging
Lipstick can be drying or emphasise chapped lips, so the 2022 trend of lip slugging has been my saviour – hydration is key. The trend is simply layering lip balms! Try it before bed to create a smooth, soft canvas ready for your red lip of choice.
Skincare-infused Formulas
From skincare-infused foundations that keep blemishes at bay to lipsticks that feel more like a balm, 2022 has been all about combining skincare with makeup to care for your complexion. We’ve seen many luxury brands hopping on this trend, and my favourite has got to be lipsticks designed to hydrate your lips in vibrant pigmented shades.

Beaming Highlighter Everywhere
Upping your highlighter usage is a great way to transition into winter makeup look. The cold can leave skin looking dull and dry, so a dramatic pop of highlight will ensure you sparkle all night long. Apply liberally to your cheekbones or as an all-over sparkling blush. Continue the highlighter down onto my collarbones and shoulders for an all-over shine.
