The Ordinary Retinol 0.2% in Squalane 30ml

Reduce the appearance of fine lines and photodamage with Ordinary Retinol 0.2% in Squalane, a retinol treatment for normal skin types

The Ordinary Retinol 0.2% in Squalane serum is the lowest concentration out of their retinol products. Also known as vitamin a, the 0.2% retinol works to minimise wrinkles, evens out skin tone and revitalises its appearance. Alongside, squalane, which helps to hydrate and soothe the skin while using this serum.

Another quality about retinol that should be noted is that it encourages cell turnover, which means that it delivers renewed and healthy skin, while also minimising blemishes for a more youthful, unified and rejuvenated complexion.

Why We Love It

Retinoids were first used as an acne treatment over fifty years ago but researchers discovered that it also minimises dark spots, which makes it a great treatment anyone with hyperpigmentation. As retinol is an incredibly powerful ingredient, it’s recommended that you start with this lower concentration until your skin builds up a tolerance to it. So, this 0.2% solution is perfect if you’ve never used it before! The potency is also easy to control thanks to the pipette which ensures you don’t apply too much.

How To Use It

Using the pipette, apply a small amount to face during the evening, after water-based serums but before heavier treatments. Don’t use this formula with other retinoid treatments. Use sun protection following the use of this product.

Note: Irritation will occur until your skin has built up a tolerance to this product. If irritation persists stop using.

Works Well With

If you’re looking for a more gentle version of this product, then check out The Ordinary’s range of Granactive Retinoids, which mimic retinoids but don’t cause any irritation. Alternatively, explore the collection for formulas that have higher concentrations if you’re looking for a more full-on treatment.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from As part of a range it appears to be effective. Deciding to upgrade my skin care regime, as the signs of aging were starting to get to me a little too much, in addition to 3rd party day & night moisturisers, then I started using this; having heard good things about the value for money vs other brands with retinol added. Now I've started on the lowest %age due to the warnings about sensitivity & building up tolerance - & whilst my initial thoughts (days 1 & 2) on using were that this was perhaps a little too much of a homeopathic dose, it's proven to be a good call since, whilst there were no issues with most of my face, a couple of days in I started getting very dry & slightly sore eyes; & was having to moisturise that area several times a day to alleviate. Two & a half weeks in & things have certainly gotten better though... (& have started with just this, i have also added in the AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution, Azelaic Acid Suspension 10% & Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution - all from The Ordinary) ...however the big improvements were from - 1. Moisturising after using the Retinol solution in the evenings. 2. & also using some of their plain Squalane - after all of the other potions in the mornings. In terms of effectiveness, whilst it's still early days & I can't say that this is the one thing that's made a difference, the combination of treatments certainly appears to have made an improvement to the lines on my under eye area; which were the most problematic issue... ...but also has started to reduce the visibility of small areas of broken veins - to the level of not always feeling that I need to use concealer. Okay, I'm not yet being confused with a small child, but the initial signs are really promising & in my mid 40s then every little helps... ;)
