3 Of The Best Curling Mascaras

3 Of The Best Curling Mascaras: Benefit Roller Lash, YSL The Curler, DIOR Overcurl

If you’ve got straight eyelashes your eyelash curler is likely to be a necessity rather than a nice-to-have beauty tool (I couldn’t be without mine!). However, did you know that you can also achieve a curl using a curling mascara?

It doesn’t matter how long your lashes are, if they’re straight, it can be hard to see the effects of mascara. Creating a curl will help to open up your eyes, making them appear bigger and more alert. I have small eyes, and a curling mascara is one of the clever tricks I use to make them appear bigger.

The cause of straight lashes

• Straight lashes are more common amongst Asian, Spanish and Eastern European ethnicities.
• Straight lashes are thought to be caused by a lack of double eyelid creases. A monolid can cause lashes to grow downward and out rather than out and upwards.

What can I do to make my eyelashes curl?

• Use a specialist curling mascara (for my recommendations scroll down). To get the most out of your curling mascara, start at the base of your lashes (as close to the lash line as you can) and wiggle out and up as you apply.
• Use an eyelash curler 10 seconds before applying mascara. Heating it with a hairdryer first will help the curl to stay even longer.
• Partner up your usual mascara with your regular mascara. Apply the waterproof formula first and then a mascara of your choice. It helps to prevent your curl from drooping and make it last all day.

1. For A Wide-Eyed Curl

Why it’s good for curl: its specialist brush makes it really easy to lift your lashes while you coat them.
Wand: the Curler’s secret weapon it’s wide to make coating your lashes really easy. The inner curve is a fibre brush and helps to create a volumised curl while the outer curve is an elastomer comb that will allow you to lift and define your lashes to perfection.
Longevity: it smudged a little after 6 hours of wear on my lower lash line.
Special features in addition to being curling:
• 2-in-1 formula delivers volume and curl.
• Double-sided wand to coat and separate lashes for a defined volume finish.
• Contains coconut oil, jojoba oil and walnut leaf extract to nourish lashes

When I first tried this mascara I have to admit I did find the wand a little on the big side. That said, I do have quite small eyes so it wouldn’t be hard for my peepers to feel a little intimidated by a slightly larger wand. Despite this, The Curler gave me a naturally volumised and wide-eyed effect in just a few strokes. I was amazed at how easily it separated my lashes, as usually, this is something I have a problem with, but with this curling mascara, there was not a clump in sight!

2. For Lengthening Curl

Why it’s good for curl: it has a curve-setting formula.
Wand: made from a synthetic material Roller Lash has a slight curve that makes application really easy as well as a patent-pending hook design that catches, lifts and curls each lash.
Longevity: it did not budge throughout the day.
Special features in addition to being curling:
• Water-resistant
• Long wearing – up to 12 hours
• Infused with provitamin B5 and serin to condition lashes
• Satin finish

I’ll let you into a little secret, out of all the curling mascaras I tried, this is my favourite. It just ticks every box for me. Why? Well the wand made it so easy to apply and effortlessly coat my lashes from root to tip – I had no idea my lashes were this long! Roller Lash’s curl-setting formula keeps the curl in place and it doesn’t droop throughout the day. No smudging or flaking either, just long, separated and perfectly curled lashes with just a touch of volume. I’d recommend this as a great day mascara.

3. For Volumising Curl

3 Of The Best Curling Mascaras: DIOR Diorshow Iconic Overcurl Spectaculare Volume & Curl Professional Mascara

Why it’s good for curl: curved brush and a shape-holding formula that contains ingredients to make your lashes look more curled with increased use.
Wand: an ‘incurve’ brush modelled after professional eyelash curlers with bristles to coat each lash evenly while curling.
Longevity: Iconic Overcurl did not smudge or move throughout the day.
Special features in addition to being curling:
• Volumising formula
• K-Polymers included in the formula will help to strengthen and plump lashes.

I have to admit that I do love a bristle brush when it comes to mascaras, they just seem to like my lashes and make application easier. What I love about this DIOR mascara is that it applies so evenly over the lashes but also adds immediate volume and curl without looking clumpy or caked. I applied two coats on a night out and someone actually asked if I had fake lashes on! This would be the curling option I would go for if you’re looking for something with curl plus a little drama!
