As the rise of beautiful but barely-there makeup continues, natural mascaras are having a moment, too. I for one have always been a fan, my eyes are fairly small and piling on lots of volume can cause my small eyes to look even smaller, so I always prefer a more natural approach to eyes.
My favourite has got to be the DHC Double Protection mascara (it’s the holy grail in my opinion), however, in my quest for the perfect natural lash effect, I’ve discovered a couple of close contenders to suit different preferences. More about those if you scroll down, but first let’s tackle how to master a natural lash.
How can I make my mascara look natural?
The trick to achieving a ‘your lashes but better’ look isn’t just in the formulation, there are a couple of tips that you should also put into practice to achieve the less-is-more lash effect.
Colour is important – unless you have very dark or black hair, sometimes a black mascara can be really harsh looking if you’re going for a natural makeup look. Try a brown mascara as a more subtle alternative (and thank me later!), plus if you have blue or grey eyes it will really make your eye colour pop.
A brush that will separate – lashes that are perfectly separated will always look more natural. Select a mascara with a brush that will assist with separation.
Application technique is key – for your upper lashes, zig-zag the wand at the root of the lashes and then comb straight up. If you decided to coat your bottom lashes too (for a natural look you may just want to leave them) take care to not apply too much.
Number of coats – for a natural effect you should only need one coat, if you do fancy a little bit of subtle drama – try two!
Check the expiry date of your mascara – an expired mascara will not apply in the way that it’s supposed to. After 3 months you should replace it.
Take care of your lashes – lashes in good condition will always look more naturally beautiful. Try using a lash serum to boost lashes and to help with growth and thickness.
1. The barely-there natural mascara

Why it gives natural-looking lashes: it’s light brown mink shade isn’t too harsh and gel formula leaves a light coat of product on the lashes.

Perfect for creating a subtle lash enhancement without even looking as though you’re wearing mascara. Although technically a tinted primer, it works well on its own, too and is the perfect mascara to wear if you’re going bare-faced but just want a little something on your eyes to make you look a little more awake. It’s a mink-brown shade that leaves my lashes feeling soft and feathery, but more importantly totally natural and as a bonus, it conditions your lashes while you wear it.
2. The long-wear natural mascara
Product: DHC Mascara Perfect Pro – Double Protection
Why it gives natural-looking lashes: its small but perfectly formed brush allows you to apply just the amount of mascara to your lashes without them looking overdone and creating a separated and lengthened lash that looks completely natural.
Wand: small and slender, it goes into a point at the end making it easy to reach those inner and outer corner lashes, as well as getting right into the root.
Longevity: it lasts and lasts with zero flaking, fading or smudging.

The hidden gem (in my opinion!), not many people know about this mascara, but they should! It’s always one I recommend whenever someone asks me ‘what’s a good mascara to try?’. Why? Because it nails the natural lash effect but can also be layered to create drama if need be. But, the real edge this mascara has over lots of others I’ve tried is the fact it just doesn’t budge once you’ve applied it. If you’re after longevity for your natural lash look, this is it, plus its small but perfectly formed brush makes reaching those tricky lashes a dream.
3. The fluttery and full natural mascara
Product: Shiseido ImperialLash MascaraInk
Why it gives natural-looking lashes: it’s combing effect doesn’t overload the lashes.
Wand: features a rigid core, surrounded by flexible silicone bristles and a bristle crown tip for coating hard-to-reach lashes.
Longevity:
Special features in addition to making lashes look natural: Not a smudge or flake in sight after a full day of wearing.

• Weightless formula.
If you’re looking for natural lashes with just a little bit ‘more’ this is the right choice for you. Great for darker skin and darker hair tones (where brown mascaras sometimes don’t work as well) it has an ultra-black finish thanks to the crushed pigments in the formula. You can almost feel the silicone combing brush gliding through your lashes and evenly coating it. I also love the fact that this creates fuller lashes but in a natural way, plus it also feels incredibly lightweight, as if you’re wearing nothing on your lashes!
