Color is part of the very identity of the House of Dior. In 1955, Christian Dior launched his first lipstick collection, offering eight shades from vibrant red to orange-red: Rouge Dior, a now-legendary product. Christian Dior himself named the colors of his new creations, borrowing from the pictorial, theatrical and literary vocabulary. "Gris Dior" ("Dior Gray"), "Rouge Dior" ("Dior Red") and "Rose Bonheur" ("Cheerful Pink") enriched the palette of the couturier, for whom color responded to different types of femininity.
The Fragrance House began with the launch of Miss Dior in 1947. The remarkable thing about the history of Christian Dior Parfums is that this activity started at the same time as Christian Dior Couture. This reveals the important role of fragrance for Mr. Christian Dior, as the final touch to his dresses. Not only was fragrance very important for him, he also believed that fragrance should express the same image of quality and creativity as his dresses.
Each flower has its secret. Capturing its scent is both an art and a science. In Distillation, this age-old technique, the fragrant raw material is carried as essential oil in steam through a still. It then passes through a condenser that cools the steam so that the essential oil and water separate in a Florentine flask to obtain both essence and floral water. Only the essence is used. In Extraction, Flowers are submerged in a solvent which extracts the desired aromatic compounds and waxes. The solvent evaporates, leaving behind a solid, waxy substance known as a "concrete". Once made soluble, the waxes are removed to obtain the "absolute", also known as "the perfumer's diamond".
Christian Dior loved the theme of freshness in his fragrances, a sophisticated freshness that he would highlight in all of his fragrance creations. "We must have a Miss Dior Eau de Cologne." Christian Dior made this declaration in 1950 with the aim of offering a fresh and personal version of his first fragrance to a wider clientele. The couturier of the Avenue Montaigne took the same approach for his fragrances as he did for his Couture collections. He would come to launch fresher versions of Miss Dior, Diorama and Diorissimo.
