Serge Lutens Ambre Sultan Eau de Parfum Spray 50ml

This fragrance is not an Oriental, but an Arab and a Lutens. That being the case, don't expect it to fit in.
The point of departure was a scented wax, found in a souk and long forgotten in a wooden box. The amber only became sultanesque after I reworked the composition using cistus, an herb that sticks to the fingers like tar, then added an overtone that nobody had ever dreamed of: vanilla. Why? Because vanilla is sticky, too, and it clung to my memory.

Our Fragrance Expert says:

“Ambre Sultan is perhaps the most popular and iconic of Luten’s scents.  It’s an oriental take on amber (an accord of benzoin, labdanum and vanilla) that mixes the plushness of the accord with deep spices and herbs evoking the vivid image of Moroccan spice markets. It is nothing short of a classic.”

Rated 5 out of 5 by Stunning medicinal bright Amber I love this. Ambre Sultan is possibly the fragrance I will regularly wear whatever the weather. Some folk will insist that a)it's a feminine and b)it's a scent for winter. I don't get the feminine thing at all, it's definitely unisex. I "do" get the insistence about being a winter scent. Ambre Sultan opens with this spicy bunch of medicinal herbs, which makes you think of mulled wine and liniment. However Ambre Sultan also works in the blazing heat, really try it, the coolness of whatever that herbal mix is is utterly perfect for escaping the heat without resorting to a citrus. For the amber itself, it's thick, powerful & resinous. This is a head-turner. As it develops, Ambre Sultan gets this creamy, powdery vanilla note, that just stays there. It feels really clean, but inviting on your skin. II really do love this. May 7, 2011
Rated 5 out of 5 by Amazing Amber Having tried many `ambers' over the years they were all discounted generally because they were too sweet, cloying or it just didn't work. Not ready to give up, and being a fan of SL fragrance I decided to give this a go. I have to admit that at first, although I wanted to love it, like some of Serge L's other creations I just couldn't get on with it. So I left it a few weeks and went back to it as there was definitely something there that I liked - and I'm so glad I did. On me the opening is almost acrid, bitter, smoke, however, a few minutes later this gives way to the most gorgeous fragrance of amber but with a difference and although it is sweet it's definitely not `sickly' as it's tempered by the herbs and spices which are there but don't overpower, just blend beautifully. The whole fragrance is perfectly balanced. I would also add that, if like me you are not a fan of vanilla, don't be put off as, again on me, it is not obviously there. I've had people ask me what I'm wearing several times so not just me who loves this! Happy to wear day/night and any time of the year. This is definitely another one which proves that, when it comes to scent, Serge Lutens is a genius. October 30, 2015

Rated 5 out of 5 by The Amber Hunt I have a pretty decent and varied fragrance collection, but recently decided I was missing a good amber for my collection, which started a somewhat obsessive hunt for my perfect amber. I love amber as a note and so wanted something with amber as the main focus. To be clear, I was specifically looking for amber the fantasy note based upon the colour and texture of amber resin, as opposed to ambregris which is aged whale vomit. My hunt for "my" amber led me far and wide. I read countless reviews online, I sampled widely, anything amber based was game. Very early on in my search a fellow fragrance fanatic told me I would be hard pressed to beat Ambre Sultan, a name that came up time and again during my search. So I tried various different scents, finding one too weak, another too bitter, some too sweet, some well out of the price range of us normal mortals and some sadly discontinued. There were some I liked, some I loathed, some that left me cold, others that I fell a bit in love with. And then I finally got to try Ambre Sultan and realised I should have paid heed to those words of wisdom early on in my search - this is a hard scent to beat. There is a dry, herbal bitterness to the top notes of this, a very crisp, slightly bitter quality, that stands it apart from other ambers, that tend to open sweet. Over the first few minutes the herbs and spices and bitter qualities dance around, finding their space, with the glow of amber emerging radiantly beneath. The herbal quality soon begins to settle, although it remains very present it does not dominate and plays a beautiful counterpart to the sweet lush thickness of amber. Through the heart of the fragrance the herbal aspects and amber dance hand in hand, neither overshadowing the other, the amber never veers into super sweet territory while the combination of bitter herbs and spices with sweet resinous amber conjures a warm, dry and enveloping atmosphere. In the drydown the herbs take a back seat and smooth warm vanilla and amber radiate a soft, sweet and refined aura of scent. This is a real beauty, for any gender, any occasion really, in my opinion. You could wear this on a hot summers day or for a night out in winter. Longevity is pretty decent, I get a good 8 hours from this, while projection is enough to create an aura of scent without suffocating anyone nearby. Highly recommended. May 4, 2015
