Known for provocative energy, vividness and a fresh attitude, the Joop! name is synonymous with modernity and bright classicism.
A multi-faceted and prolific designer, Wolfgang Joop creates designs that define the spirit of the times. Citing inspiration from sources as diverse as the minimalist Calvin Klein and Donna Karan, and the old-school glamour of Greta Garbo and Marlene Dietrich, Joop believed that fashion should not be a blatant expression of money, but a projection of personal identification and style.
Throughout Europe, the name Joop! conjures up, in the minds of women and men alike, the utmost in luxurious ready-to-wear.
This same symbol for luxury can be found in Joop! fragrances.
Founder Wolfgang Joop was born in Germany in 1944. Through studying advertising psychology at the University of Braunschweig, Joop discovered an eye for design and detail, and upon graduation went on to work as a fashion illustrator and journalist, and as a freelance designer for fashion houses in Italy, France and Germany.
Joop began selling designer clothing eponymously as Joop! in 1981, the exclamation added in order to differentiate Joop the artist from Joop! the brand. Joop began creating collections for men, women, children and the home, and in 1988 added Joop! Jeans, a denim and sportswear collection. Around this time, Joop! fragrances were launched to the European market, including the legendary Joop! Homme.
Until Joop, Germany had very limited designers achieving international acclaim. After years of domestic success, Joop! was hailed as a worldwide label in the early 1990s. Today, Joop! creates contemporary designs for men and women, alongside shoes, underwear and accessories under the Joop! Bodywear line, as well as jewellery and watches under Joop! Time.
