binky guide for flat to party night hair

Greetings fellow beauty-lovers. It’s been another crazy-busy week here in Binkyland and once again I’ve found myself dashing from job to job and meeting to meeting with barely a moment to catch my breath.

Last week I blogged about how to take your make-up from daytime cute to nighttime sexy. Well this week it’s all about the hair. I’ve got a big red-carpet event coming up soon and I want to look awesome. Now, usually I’d book myself in for a serious styling session at my favourite salon. Unfortunately, my packed schedule means I’m going to be dashing from a shoot straight to the premiere, wriggling into my party dress in the limo on the way!

I’ll be using last week’s make-up tips to ensure my face looks party-ready but I’m also going to have to do my hair on the go, and for me, party hair is all about volume, curl and shine so I’m going to need all my styling secrets to breathe new life into my droopy daytime do.

Products Used

Step 1: Apply mousse

Mousse is essential for adding lift and volume to flat daytime hair, giving dull, tired locks new energy. The Big Sexy Hair Root Pump Spray Mousse is one of my favourites, it easily takes into the hair and gives good hold and body without being too sticky. Shake the can, then squirt a blob of mousse the size of a walnut into your hands and massage it into the roots of your hair. Now throw your hair forwards and blow dry, running your fingers through the roots to lift and volumise, giving your hair natural body.

Step 2: Curl your locks

You’ll need a pair of curling tongs. I think it’s well worth investing in this styling tool – I use my THX Wave Hello tongs all the time. Long, glossy curls add instant evening glamour to your look, and they’re so easy to use. Just plug in, style and go! Take a small section of hair, wrap it around the curling iron and hold it for a few seconds until you feel the heat coming through, then release the hair – it’s important not to overheat the hair. Continue to curl the rest of your hair in the same way. Some people like a tight “ringlets” look to their curls, but I prefer a looser, more natural wave so I run my fingers through the curls as I go, softening the effect so the finished look is a natural, bouncy head of hair.

Step 3: Backcomb the roots

Backcombing is an easy way to add instant lift to your style, and I feel that a big glam do has much more impact for evening. I backcomb the hair all over my head but I particularly focus on the crown, adding extra body there for that bouffant “Cheryl Cole” look. Take sections of your hair, lift them up, and comb the hair close to the roots down into the head. Continue in the same way, moving around the head until your hair is as voluminous as you want it to be. Don’t panic if your hair looks like a bird’s nest at this point! Once you’ve finished backcombing, pat your hair down, and tidy the top with your comb, concealing the backcombing so the finished look has both volume and a smooth, sleek finish.

Step 4: Spritz with hairspray

Hairspray is essential for fixing your style and holding it in place throughout the evening’s escapades. Tigi Catwalk Your Highness Hairspray has a super strong hold to make sure your big hair won’t budge – it smells delicious too. Hold the can about 20 centimetres from your head and spritz all over. Don’t overdo it – the result you’re aiming for is a sexy do with bounce and movement. Too much hairspray and it’ll look unnatural and feel stiff.

Step 5: Spray on a little dry shampoo

Dry shampoo is a fabulous product to keep in your handbag for emergency touch-ups. I love Klorane Oat Milk Gentle Dry Shampoo – if your hair is feeling dull, flat and a little bit greasy, this will instantly revitalise it, freshening up your style and making your hair smell yummy at the same time. Give the dry shampoo a shake, then spray it into the roots of your hair. This product comes out white and slightly powdery so it’s best to spray it onto sections of hair that can’t be seen – I use it on the underneath areas. Once you’ve sprayed it on, massage in the dry shampoo and you’ll have gorgeous, bouncy and beautifully scented locks. Enjoy!
