The iconically fragrant house of Guerlain recently opened a boutique in Paris called the ‘Guerlain Parfumeur’ boutique and it sees the house showing their more colourful side. Their bee bottles are dressed in shades of chartreuse, maroon and cerulean, in a veritable rainbow of fragrant beauty. In the boutique, Guerlain not only celebrates their esteemed history, but also shows their more playful side – a sense of fun that has been demonstrated in fragrances like La Petite Robe Noire and L’Homme Idéal.
Guerlain’s Aqua Allegoria line, a collection of light and fleeting little ditties that celebrate perfumery’s extensive materials, is the perfect place for the brand to be a bit more playful and for summer 2016, that’s exactly what Guerlain have done with Pera Granita. Inspired by pear trees growing abundantly in the orchards of the Hesperides, this latest Aqua Allegoria is described as a ‘sweet daydream’ and I can certainly go along with that simply adding that, as far as daydreams go, this one knows how to make you smile!
Top: Calabrian Bergamot, Grapefruit, Lemon and Pear
Base: Cedar, Moss and White Musk
How Does it Smell?
Well, the short answer is like a sparkling scoop of blush-coloured pear sorbet, but it would be lazy of me just to leave the description there. Pera Granita opens with a bright flash of sweet summery citrus, like a multicoloured cocktail swigged liberally by the beach. To my nose there is a festival of fruit in the opening; crisp orchard apples, effervescent pink grapefruit, sharp lemons and of course, sweet pear. The pear is cool and fresh, with a dewy green feel that flits between juicy and milky as it settles on the skin. The whole thing does feel like an ice-cold spoonful of delicious sorbet and it’s just as refreshing.
Pera Granita’s heart, like many of the Aqua Allegoria’s is unapologetically floral. Here, the flower of choice is osmanthus, an exotic bloom that has an odour profile similar to apricot jam and soft leather. The osmanthus here is, unsurprisingly, bright and breezy with a strong white floral vibe. Flowers and fruit go together like jelly and ice cream (now I’m hungry) and Pera Granita makes the most of this pairing, using the osmanthus to add a sense of richness to the flirtatiously dazzling nature of the fruit. In the base, Pera Granita goes full musk, letting those fruits and flowers ride on a warm summer breeze of soft, fuzzy cashmere. It finishes as delightful as it starts.
I’d summarise Pera Granita as being exactly what one expects from a modern Aqua Allegoria. It’s a fruity delight carried on a soft breeze of musk, making for the perfect summer fragrance. What I like most about this particular Aqua Allegoria is just how fun it is. The fruity, sorbet and pop-like vibrancy of Pera Granita feels perfectly on trend with Guerlain’s new flirtation with bold colours. So, if you want something fresh, fruity and floral in pop art colours this summer, then look no further!
