I’m someone who day-to-day always wears black, and only if I’m feeling wild – a little touch of colour. My alter ego, on the other hand, is a bit extra and loves to play with colour in her makeup and clothes; the bolder the better (I want to meet her, she sounds fun)! Her favourite time to make an appearance is at festivals, parties and Halloween, and, as you can imagine, she’s had a little time off.
Being in lockdown for so long has made her want to be more adventurous, and let my inner introvert take a back seat in my fashion and beauty choices. My latest makeup obsession for switching vibes is eyeliners because they’re not only stylish, but they’re fun and so versatile, too. You can change your whole look depending on your mood, swapping between chic Parisian, confident trendsetter to exuberant festival-goer with a simple change as small as the brightness of the colour or a sparkly finish.
Who is your alter ego? Discover every side of you with this selection of some of my favourite eyeliners in a variety of exciting and classic shades that I’ve been using to mix up my mood and add a fun twist to my classic look…
1. The Chic Parisian
My classy, Zara basics-loving alter ego loves adding a classic sharp flick with her outfits because nothing says Parisian style more than a clean, black wing. Anyone who wears the classic cat-eye knows that it’s all about the precision of the flick, and this can be harder to achieve with a pencil liner; a soft tip pen-like Benefit Roller Liner Liquid Eyeliner means that it glides on like a dream, leaving a flawless flick behind. The highly pigmented matte formula means it’s the blackest black, as well as being smudge-proof, which means you can trust it to stay put. All that’s left is for you to go full-blown Emily In Paris and add a red lip! My favourite has to be Dior Ultra Rouge in shade Ultra Spice – there’s nothing more classic than a chic cat-eye and a red pout.
2. The Dancefloor Diva
Everyone’s dance floor diva and inner festival-goer need a colourful glitter eyeliner in their makeup bag; it’s a must for big diva moments! A glitter liner is easier to apply and remove than glitter, making it less messy and even chicer. The GIVENCHY Phenomen’Eyes Brush Tip Eyeliner is definitely one of the best; the ultra-pigmented, liquid-gel formula locks in your sparkle and makes it easy to apply a precise flick using the soft tip. When you’re done, you’re left with eyes shimmering with glitter so that your fun-loving alter ego can really sparkle! What shade does my diva alter ego love? It has to be shade Bold Blue, it’s bright and striking.
3. The Colour-Confident Chick
Every colour-confident alter ego needs a rainbow of colour eyeliners that they can tap into for every mood they are feeling; for bold moments, I always opt for the Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in shade Viper, which is a gorgeous deep purple colour. The striking eyeliner has a blendable and waterproof formula that will leave a high impact flick that can be sharpened or softened and smudged out, depending on the type of finish you want to create.
4. The Cool Girl
When your cool alter ego wants to take centre stage, opt for an eye kohl, because nothing says edgy like a smokey, smudged-out black liner. Lancome Le Crayon Khol’s super-creamy pencil has an extremely blendable formula, making it ideal for creating a diffused black smokey eye or cat flick. The high pigmented formula ensures maximum impact for your look and even includes a smudging tool to help you smudge it out in style; it’s effortlessly cool.
