If you’re a fan of the legendary Clarins Lip Oil, then you’re going to want to hear all about the 2022 reformulation of this iconic, best-seller.
I recently had the pleasure of testing out every single shade of the newly updated lip oils for the purpose of creating this review (I’m very lucky, I know!) And now I want to answer every single quandary you might have about the Clarins Comfort Lip Oil (previously preceded by ‘Instant Light’) – from queries about what it looks like to questions about its skincare benefits. Keep reading for my full Clarins Lip Oil review…
The Most Important Thing About The Clarins Lip Oil Is…
It’s tricky for me to pick just one important thing about Clarins’ cult-status lip oil, but I guess if I had to choose, it would be this: it’s been revamped for 2022 to offer a new-and-improved formula in eight exciting shades, five years after the original Clarins Lip Oil came out.
But I hope you’ll indulge me and allow me to share a few more juicy bits of information that you simply have to know… Utilising Clarins’ expertise in essential oils (which they’ve been working with for no less than 65 years), the lip-plumping oils dress your lips in a gorgeously glossy high shine finish, while adding sheer tinted colour and offering a range of skincare benefits. But what does the Lip Comfort Oil do for your skin, I hear you ask. Well, each oil offers the following:
• 6 hours of hydration
• 6 hours of nutrition
• 8 hours of protection
And what do those who tested it out first think of it?
• 95% said their lips had an ultra-glossy finish
• 93% said it enhanced their lips’ natural colour
• 98% said it left their lips more beautiful and supple
What Does It Look Like On?
Now we’ve reached the important part: what does Clarins’ Lip Oil look like? Each shade has a high shine, mirror-like finish that doesn’t look shimmery or glittery, but it instead creates more of a ‘wet lip’ look. As the oils have such a glossy finish, they catch the light beautifully, visually plumping up your lips as they reflect the light.
But the most impressive thing about these oils is that five of the Clarins Lip Oil shades (03 – Cherry, 04 – Pitaya, 05 – Apricot, 08 – Strawberry and 10 – Plum) are pH-reactive as they contain an intelligent pigment that reacts upon contact with your lips. This means the shades are made-to-measure; their personalised finish suits and complements your skin tone no matter which of the five shades you opt for.
It’s also important to note that the oils look quite extreme in colour before you apply them, but I promise you, they have a much more subtle sheer look once applied. I would personally wear every single shade – even the chocolate one, which I didn’t think I would have said before I’d tried it. These shades are fairly buildable too; if you want a more subtle look, just apply a dab and blend it out with your fingertip.
Another thing you might be wondering is: how long does the Clarins Lip Oil last? It does, admittedly, depend a little on how much you apply. But I’ve found that if you apply one layer to the lips, it’s high shine finish will last an average of two to three hours before it leaves a subtle stain on your lips for a couple of hours (but if you’re anything like me, you won’t be able to stop yourself from reapplying anyway!)
What Skin Type Is It For?
The Clarins Lip Comfort Oil is best suited to combination, oily, normal and dry skin types; dehydrated lips in particular will enjoy its ultra-hydrating formula.
You Will Love This If…
If you loved the original Clarins Lip Comfort Oil, fear not; I’m confident that you’ll love the revamped versions just as much, if not more! They’re now even more nourishing (yet somehow feel even lighter on the lips).

As I’ve come to expect from any Clarins makeup launch, the Lip Comfort Oil isn’t just about the looks; it also cares for your skin. In fact, 98% of the tinted lip oil’s formula is deemed to be ‘skincare’. The deeply hydrating oil features a clever plant-powered formula packed with 93% ingredients of natural origin (the other 7% of ingredients are dedicated to ensure a gorgeous makeup finish and a luxurious texture).
As you’d expect from a lip oil, the three main ingredients include a trio of organic natural oils. New to the mix for 2022 and rich in omega 6 and omega 3, organic sweetbriar rose oil brings comfort and nutrition to your lips whilst strengthening the skin barrier function, while golden oldie active, organic jojoba oil, nourishes the lips whilst creating a beautiful, sensorial texture as hazelnut oil protects your pout from drying out. After two weeks of use, the oil leaves lips more supple, smooth and soft.
What Does Clarins’ Lip Oil Feel Like?
Although it still maintains its sensorial side, Clarins’ 2022 formula has a lighter, less sticky texture compared to its predecessor. But the big question is: is the Clarins Lip Oil sticky? It feels more like an oil or luxurious lip balm than the tacky lip oils we probably all remember from years gone by! Its nourishing texture leaves your lips feeling soft, supple and conditioned even after visible traces of the lip balm have gone; I’ve also been impressed by just how quickly the dry cracks on my lips have healed since using these oils.
What Does It Smell Like?
Each deliciously-scented lip oil is laced with a delicate aroma that’s a little bit like candied sweets. The best bit? You get wafts of the scent after you’ve applied.
What’s Special About The Design?
Held in smooth, clear tubes that allow you to see the formulations within, the lip oils have a chic finish as they are topped with a strip of silver adorned with Clarins’ name. But I have to mention the ultra-precise cushioning applicator; it’s really soft and comfortable to use as it glides over the lips in one fell swoop to offer instant colour and shine.
How Do You Use Clarins’ Lip Oil?
You can use the Clarins Lip Comfort Oil three ways, depending on the results you’re after. Of course, you can wear them alone for an enhancing touch of colour and protection, or layer it over the top of your lipstick for extra impact. Finally, the Honey Lip Comfort Oil doubles up as a softening overnight lip treatment; prepare to wake up to soft, well-nourished lips.
