Meet The Mascaras That Don’t Irritate Sensitive Eyes

3 of the Best Mascaras for Sensitive Eyes That Won't Irritate: bareMinerals Lashtopia, Lancome Definicils, La Roche-Posay Toleriane Volume Mascara

If you’re one of those people who gets watery eyes at the very thought of a mascara wand, this edit is for you!

Whether you’re a contact lens wearer, suffer from allergies (hayfever especially) or just have super sensitive eyes – some mascaras can make your already irritated eyes worse. I bet that sometimes you even question putting mascara on at all because the thought of having red bloodshot eyes throughout the day puts you off, sound familiar?

Thankfully, there is a wide selection of mascaras available formulated especially for the needs of sensitive eyes (scroll down for my verdict on what’s good), but first, let’s look at the reasons why your eyes are suffering and steps you can take to help to prevent irritation.

Why are my eyes so sensitive to mascara?

• The ingredients – as with all sensitivities, ingredients are always a key player. Colour pigments (particularly red pigment), fragrance, wheat (common with organic brands), hydroxyethylcellulose (HEC) and isopropyl myristate are the ones to look out for in particular because they can cause irritation.

• Eyelashes naturally have bacteria on them, as soon as you use a mascara wand on them it becomes contaminated and over time can build up bacteria, increasing the chance of irritation.

What can you do to help sensitive eyes?

• If your eyes are super sensitive to mascara, try a patch test initially. Swipe a little on your outer lashes and wait a few hours. If all is good, finish up with a full application.

• Look for fragrance-free, hypoallergenic and ophthalmologist-tested formulas.

• Steer away from coloured formulas, which many contain dyes that will aggravate sensitive eyes. Basic black looks good on everyone!

• Avoid waterproof formulas as they are difficult to remove and could cause more irritation.

• When applying your mascara, try not to go too close to the lash line if you have sensitive eyes.

• Change your mascara every 3 months (if you’re forgetful, write the date on your mascara with a marker pen so you know when to throw it away!).

3. Larger than life lashes for sensitive eyes

3 of the Best Mascaras for Sensitive Eyes That Won’t Irritate: bareMinerals Lashtopia Mega Volume Mineral-Based Mascara

Why it’s good for sensitive eyes: bareMinerals Lashtopia Mascara has a gentle mineral-based formula that feels light and isn’t at all irritating.
Wand: exclusive ProTwist180™ wand with 600 bristles to lift, separate and coat each lash as it curves around lashes.
Longevity: It didn’t budge throughout the day at all.

Special features in addition to being for sensitive eyes:
• Paraben-free, sulfate-free, phthalate-free, fragrance-free.
• Contains nourishing minerals and quinoa protein complex to boost lashes.

When I first applied this mascara I wasn’t sure about it. However, after looking at my lashes a minute later I soon changed my mind. If you’re looking for a mascara suitable for sensitive eyes that does everything and then a little bit more, this is it. Its large brush doesn’t appear to be doing a lot while you apply it, in fact, I questioned if it was applying the product at all. But the trick is that the formula is so light you hardly notice it applying, it’s when you look at your lashes afterwards that you can see how it’s multi-tasking formula has worked – creating length, curl, volume and separation all at once.
