I always have very high expectations for any new fragrance that Parfums de Marly launch. And their 2022 signature, Haltane, certainly doesn’t disappoint. I was lucky enough to try this masterpiece of niche perfumery a few weeks before it was revealed, and I instantly knew that it was going to be a huge success; read on to find out why…
This Fragrance Smells Like…
Haltane captures a sense of light and dark, radiance and shadow. It starts with a dazzling freshness as an aromatic duo of clary sage and lavender are lifted by a touch of citrus-green bergamot for a scent that feels both relaxing and uplifting. The heart unveils a rich, opulent side that epitomises Parfums de Marly luxury: saffron is paired with soft cedarwood and dark, resinous oud wood, which is balanced out by a surprisingly sweet praline note that adds an ultra-modern edge to the fragrance. This sugary facet doesn’t make the fragrance sickly sweet, but it prevents it from feeling too dark and heavy (perfectly capturing the radiance-and-shadow approach).
As the fragrance warms and settles on our skin, its sensual, sophisticated base notes are revealed. Smooth, smoky leather is layered with earthy patchouli, grassy vetiver, luminous agarwood and musks for a long-lasting signature that’s sensual and suave yet still comforting.
What’s The Story Behind This Scent?
As I expect from Parfums de Marly, Haltane features a blend of rare and noble ingredients, which revisit the tradition of 18th century French perfume making whilst offering a signature that’s made for today.
Notably, the precious woods that lace the fragrance nod to Haute Parfumerie, while also paying homage to the forests surrounding the Château de Marly, a historic royal residence and an inspiration for Parfums de Marly. This castle was designed to blend into nature, and I think that Haltane Eau de Parfum represents this merging of absolute luxury and rich, luscious woodland perfectly.
You Will Love This If…
If you love deep, long-lasting signatures, then you’ll adore Haltane (or any other Parfums de Marly fragrance, for that matter). It’s one of those impressively long-lasting signatures that you can still smell on your skin when you’re snuggled up in bed (after a full day of wear, exercise and a shower…)
This Perfume Smells Similar To:
Haltane is reminiscent of walking through a sun-dappled herb garden as the last drop of sunlight throws shadows over each texture leaf; the air around you is perfumed by the grass, flowers and herbs that grow in the garden. There’s a rich, earthy herbaceous tone to start, which makes you feel like you’ve bent down to rub your fingertips on a sage leaf. But the sun has almost set, so you soon seek shelter in a wood cabin, where you enjoy a smooth glass of your favourite tipple, perhaps with a dark chocolate truffle thrown in for good measure.
Is Parfums de Marly Haltane Unisex?
Parfums de Marly Haltane is presented as a male fragrance; it does have a more traditionally masculine presence due to its bold woody-aromatic facets, but it still has universal appeal. There are plenty of us in the office who would wear it.
What’s The Longevity Like?
Parfums de Marly Haltane lasted well over ten hours on my skin, absolutely blowing the average EdP’s four to five hours’ wear out of the water. This only goes to show the quality of the ingredients used.
What’s Special About The Bottle?
Haltane is housed in the emblematic Parfums de Marly flacon, dressed in a chic muted green hue that nods to the earthy, herbal notes within. Fans of the niche fragrance house will recognise the raised emblem on the front, which is in honour of the Chevaux de Marly – a pair of marble sculptures commissioned by Louis XV of France in 1743.
